When a woman has a baby in Dar es Sallam, Tanzania, she must bring her own birth kit to the hospital. This kit includes gloves for the nurses, cotton, iodine, medication (oxytocin), clamps, sterile needles, and a bed sheet for her to lay on. This costs around $20 USD. This is a burden for these women to provide when approximately 70% of Tanzanians continue to live with less than $2 per day
Mama Love is a Tanzanian support group to support mothers by giving each one a complete birth kit.
In 2018 Mama Love saw almost 20 mothers, and this year they hope to triple that number by reaching deeper into communities as a gospel outreach.
We heard of several mother’s who lost their babies after birth or within the first week when it was preventable. Even after the loss of a baby the mothers have to pay to be able to take their baby’s body home from the hospital or they have to leave and have no burial.
Birth kits, vitamins, funds for miscellaneous health needs (ultrasounds, extra hospital stays, food for single mothers) educational resources (teaching supplies and material) all are used to help serve these women.
Average cost is only $27 to support a mama during her entire pregnancy.
$20- 1 birth kit for each mama we see
Miscellaneous costs include-
$15- A month supply of food
$15- the cost for an ultrasound
$15- A several month supply of pre-natal vitamins
$170- The total cost of having a c-section
